Surreal Things

Description

Emerged in the 1920s, Surrealism was one of the most influential avant-garde movements of the twentieth century. Its thematic preoccupations and visual strategies transformed the world of fine art, design, fashion and advertising in the subsequent decade and continue to exert a pervasive influence on many fields of practice.
Showcasing approximately 250 objects, Surreal Things was the first exhibition to explore the movement's influence on design in architecture, fashion and decorative arts. Surrealism is regarded not only as an art movement but as a cultural phenomenon; its premises spread to a number of facets of every day life. For many people it went so far as to become a lifestyle.
This catalogue covers all the works exhibited and features remarkable artists such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Meret Oppenheim, Giorgio de Chirico, Joan Miró, Jean Arp, Yves Tanguy, Alberto Giacometti, Alexander Calder y Carlo Mollino. It also pays tribute to the legacy of two of the leading figures of the movement: Salvador Dalí, who was a very prolific artist and Peggy Guggenheim, who assembled one of the most significant Surrealist art collections ever, often buying directly from the artists.
